WaterFarmers was retained to provide detailed design services for a new vertical farm seeking to utilize aquaponic fertilizers. We calculated the required biomass of fish to supply the hydroponics production and the systems necessary to house the fish and treat the water - exploring several alternatives with the client. The design was for a decoupled system, where the recirculating aquaculture and hydroponics do not share the same water in series, but the solids from the fish water are collected and reacted before being inserted as fertilizer into the hyroponics part. Our work included delivery of a 3D model of the space, process and instrumentation diagrams, and component by component estimating for capital cost, helping the client to make decisions about which systems to invest in first.
