About WaterFarmers

WaterFarmers Urban Agriculture is a progressive environmental design/build firm that supports the next generation of farmers, gardeners, and property managers. We provide consultation, general contracting, and construction services to clients interested in operating farm properties or producing food, as well as those interested in greening their urban environment or community. We are a small company entering our fifth year of operation, and are looking forward to a busy year working on a variety of interesting projects with a talented and diverse team. Our upcoming projects include greenhouse construction, irrigation system installations, rainwater harvesting installations, and landscaping for rain gardens and native plant / pollinator gardens. We work with a wide variety of clientele, including homeowners, farmers, property managers, municipalities, academic institutions, not-for-profits, and other food related commercial operations. We enjoy the ongoing challenge of creating custom solutions for our clients, whether we are working on a simple backyard vegetable garden or a sophisticated indoor agriculture facility.

WaterFarmers is based in Guelph and operates across Southern Ontario, most often along the Highway 6/ Guelph-Hamilton corridor, and occasionally farther abroad when project budgets allow for travel expenses. Our worksite is located in Morriston, just south of the 401 and east of Highway 6.

Job Description

WaterFarmers is looking for an ambitious, hard working, positive individual for part-time work (minimum 24 hours / week) providing on-site labour for a variety of tasks related to our upcoming landscaping and construction projects. A typical workday would consist of arriving at a project site, reviewing work tasks and safety concerns, moving material and tools, and assisting with physical labour tasks to accomplish on-site goals. Staff are expected to work safely, efficiently, and bring concerns to the attention of team leaders. Staff are also expected to participate in project discussions via email & mobile messaging in order to report on progress, raise concerns & issues, ask questions, and share photos. Daily input of timesheets for hours worked is required. We work indoors and outdoors year round, and provide all PPE and tools required. Safety & machinery training is provided to staff as needed. 

Basic Requirements

  • Reliable transportation. Must have a valid G license and access to a vehicle

  • Work safely and effectively in a construction or farm environment

  • Physical ability & stamina to work outdoors and lift/ move heavy construction and landscaping materials around project sites

  • Access to mobile phone for daily communication via Email, Slack, Trello, and to input timesheets via QuickBooks T-Sheets

Assets

  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools & machinery is an asset

  • Construction, plumbing, landscaping, horticulture, or farming experience are assets

  • Ability to work independently and solve problems

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Entrepreneurial interest is a plus - we are open to employee ideas for running the best business possible, fostering a positive staff environment, and pursuing new projects, products, opportunities, and collaborations

Compensation

  • Starting wage: $18 per hour

  • 24 hours minimum scheduled hours required per week

  • Potential for more shifts as projects and availability dictate

  • Paid training where required (WHMIS, Standard First Aid, Working from Heights, etc.)

  • Breaks throughout day - flexible and based on work tasks & staff needs

  • 1 hour unpaid lunch

  • 3 month probation period

  • Upon completion of probation period, access to profit sharing program and allowances for work boots, seasonal work clothing, phone expenses, and gas expenses.
